University of California, Irvine A Student Interview The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Khristine earned her bachelors degree in biological sciences from University of California, Irvine in 2016. Subjects she specializes in include biology tutoring, ACT science tutoring, and others. Check out what she had to say about her time at University of California, Irvine: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Khristine: I lived in the dorms during my first year at UC Irvine, and then commuted for the remaining years. While living at UCI, there are shuttles that most students take if they live in apartments surrounding UCI or if they want to go the gym, which is on the other side of campus. The dorms are located on campus, so students usually walk to class. The campus itself is in the shape of a circle, so it is very easy to walk or bike around campus. Most people just walk, however, so most people who live on campus dont bring a car or bike. The campus is located within a suburban town, and is known as one of the safest cities in America. The environment is very welcoming and has a positive atmosphere. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at University of California, Irvine? Khristine: It depends on the class and what you are majoring in. Most professors and teaching assistants are fairly helpful, but in some classes you have to make a bigger effort if you need help. Certain majors, such as biology, typically have very large class sizes. Some of my classes had 350-400 people in them, with one professor and a couple of TAs. Both the professors and TAs have office hours, so if you need help, those are good to go to. Not too many people attend office hours, so theyll only be a few people asking questions. Discussion sections, which are led by TAs, are also much smaller than the lecture classes, so it is easier to ask questions then. Academic advisers can be found in their offices, and you can go ask questions by walk-in or appointment. Around the time of registration, the academic advising office can get pretty busy, so its a little more difficult at that time. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Khristine: UC Irvine has two freshman dorms located on campus. The one dorm, Middle Earth, is located in the middle of campus, and is a very quick walk to most classes. The other dorm, Mesa Court, is also located on campus, but more towards the edge, so it takes a few extra minutes to get to most classes. Its still only about a ten to fifteen minute walk. Middle Earth has two dining commons and Mesa has one located inside. As for other dining options, both are relatively close to the student center, which has several other food options. The rooms are normal size for dorms, and already come with some furniture. Living in the dorms is a great way to meet people and make friends your first year, as youll be living with other freshman. There are also several social activities held in each dorm to make it easier for everyone to get to know each other. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at University of California, Irvine? Khristine: UC Irvine has many different majors, but is well known for Biology. A large amount of students are biology majors, with many hoping to go into the healthcare field. There are also several types of majors within biology, such as neurobiology or human biology, if there is a specific concentration you want to focus in on. I was a biology major, and really enjoyed it. I knew I wanted to go into the healthcare field when I started at UCI, and being a biology major helped me to decide that I really want to go on to nursing. As for the major, the professors are very knowledgeable, and although the major was challenging, I was able to learn a lot. There is a lot of support for this major, and the university does a good job of informing students on different opportunities. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Khristine: Living in the dorms during my first year made it easier to meet people. The summer before my freshman year began, I participated in UCIs summer start program, now called Freshman Edge. This program only had freshmen, and was a great way to meet people. Not as many people do this summer session, so there are less people on campus, and most people became close to the other freshmen they lived with during the program. The summer start program was about five weeks, and there were many social activities throughout the summer. Also, getting involved on campus is a great way to meet people. I never joined a sorority, so I cant speak much to that. There are many clubs on campus that are good to join because youll meet people who are interested in the same activities or organizations as you. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Khristine: I didnt go to the career center much myself, but I have friends who said they were very helpful. They hold many workshops and a couple of career fairs throughout the year. The workshops vary in what theyre about, but include help on resume writing, interviews, and jobs amongst other topics. UCI also has a website called Zotlink, that frequently posts available jobs or internships. It is a great resource where I found several opportunities on. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges at University of California, Irvine? Khristine: There are two libraries on campus that stay open until about 11PM during the week, except on Fridays. The hours are also different during the summer. In addition, there are many study areas throughout campus, with the dorms having their own study rooms. There is also a study room at the student center, as well as several other spots throughout the campus. They are all range in different sizes, but are fairly spacious. During the majority of the quarter, they do not get over-crowded, but during finals it can be kind of hard to find an open space. However, some of the study rooms allow you to reserve a spot ahead of time, which will help make sure you get a spot. Describe the surrounding town. Khristine: Across from campus, there is the University Town Center (UTC). The UTC has several places to eat. There are many things to do around Irvine, with it only being a short drive away from the Irvine Spectrum Mall or South Coast Plaza. There are also a few other shopping plazas and movie theaters that are pretty close to campus, and are great places to hang out with friends. Its also not far from San Diego, and is fairly close to several beaches. Many students like to go to Newport Beach, and some students bike there. Most students who live in the dorms dont have a car on campus, so many dont go quite as far. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Khristine: The entire school has about 30,000 students. Some of the class sizes can be fairly large. A lot of my biology classes had about 400 students in each lecture, so if you have questions, you should really go to office hours. There are only a few majors that have small class sizes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Khristine: In my last year at UCI, I took a class on insect biodiversity. I was surprised by how much I liked the class. Originally, I only signed up for the course because I needed an upper division biology course, and that particular class was the only one that matched my schedule. However, the professor was very enthusiastic about the material, and I ended up learning a lot. I enjoyed taking a class that still had to do with biology, but was a little different than the rest of the courses I took while at UCI. It was also one of the smallest biology classes I took at UCI, so there was more communication with the professor. Besides learning about different material, we had some interesting assignments throughout the quarter that was a little more hands on. The class itself has nothing to do with what I plan to do in the future, since I want to go into healthcare, but it was nice to study a different aspect of biology. (Source: analogicus)We often forget when we’re writing music for the acoustic or electric guitar that our main goal as a musician is to share an emotion with the listener through our musical instrument. Be it a feeling, a message, or energy, you can’t forget about the emotion behind it.  When we compose for the first time, we tend to forget that and just start putting notes and chords together that sound nice.However, your co mposition depends on the fundamental emotion it’s trying to express.Start by asking yourself what you want from your song:“I want a song that makes people cry”“I want a song full energy that makes people feel they can move mountains”“I want the listener to be moved by my song.”“I want to make the listener laugh”For inspiration, listen to the songs that make you feel the way you want your song to make other people feel. You can then see which guitar techniques they're using and how they're strumming or picking the guitar, for example.Keep things simple!  It might be tempting to throw everything you know how to do into a song. However, it’s better to do something well than several things poorly. You can show others what you’ve created, too.  We’re often scared of showing off our work because it’s so personal. That said, you need to put your ego to one side. Remember that any criticism can be constructive, even if it may be difficult to hear sometimes.There’s nothing from stopping you creating your own pieces very early into learning how to play the guitar. Don’t stop yourself by saying “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t have any ideas”.  Don’t think that all the good songs have already been written. This is completely false as there's no limit to the music that can be created.Finally, think about recording the pieces you make so that you can listen back to them and improvise over the top of them.  Don't forget that if you're really struggling, you can also get guitar lessons london (or anywhere really!) to help you learn to play. For example, if you’re making techno music, you probably only need around four lines of lyrics whereas in rap you’ll need plenty.  Of course, a guitarist isn’t necessarily a singer and you may struggle when writing these parts of the song.It’s not a problem, though, it’s just something you’ll have to spend more time working on.  It’s better to work on your weaknesses than to just ignore them. You can then find the chords that belong to this key.  Some of the most common chord progressions are as follows:I, II, V, II, IV, V, II, V, IV, II, IV, I, VI, VI, IV, VI, II, IV, VI, III, II, VYou can also find others. The most common in D major would be as follows:D, Em, A, DD, G, A, DD, A, G, DD, G, D, AD, Bm, D, AD, Em, G, AD, F#m, Em, AAfter you’ve found a chord progression, play them again and again while trying to hum a melody over the top.  Don’t forget to write down or record what you create so that you don’t forget.Finally, put down your plectrum and leave it for a couple days. When you come back to it, you can improve it because it’ll feel like you’re listening to it for the first time.Writing the Vocal Melody FirstYou don’t need to attend a music school to start creating your own music.It might be worthwhile going somewhere you can feel inspired. (Source: Free-Photos)While playing over a melody is quite a complicated method, it’s a great way to get off the beaten track and create your own song.The first method creates a solid song but it may feel a little flat whereas this method can allow you to create more nuanced music.  If you’ve got a melody that you don’t know i n your head, write it down and keep singing it until you can’t forget it.Now things get complicated: you’re going to have to put a chord progression over the melody.  Think chord by chord. Each measure, you need to play a chord.Don’t forget to include the important notes from the melody in these chords. The first notes and the notes that last the longest are often the most important ones in a melody.The end of the process is the same: record what you’ve got and come back to it a few days later.Composing Music for a BandIn a typical band, you’ll usually find:An acoustic guitar or an electric guitarA bass guitarDrumsA lead guitarThe melody is usually played on the lead guitar be it jazz, blues, folk, or rock music. The other instruments accompany the lead.  You can use the aforementioned methods to compose your own music for the band.Write a Guitar RiffYou can also compose a guitar riff like the song Smoke on the Water.  Keep it simple! A riff needs to be simple to play so i t can be incorporated into a song with the other instruments.Write a Bass RiffSometimes, the bass plays the riff. It’s very common in groove or funk music.  If you’re in a band, ask your bassist to help you. The drummer could also help out because the bass and drums are intimately linked, especially in terms of rhythm.If you don’t have a band, you’re going to have to learn a bit about the bass, otherwise, you won’t be able to do any of this.Chords that Go Together WellTo compose, there’s a pattern you should learn off by heart:Major - minor - minor - major - major - minor - minorFor example, in C major, it’d be like this:C major - D minor - E minor - F major - G major - A minor - B minorVary the IntensityTo make your song more interesting, consider changing the intensity with a calm verse and a heavy chorus.  Don’t forget to use rests, too. Introvert Whisperer / Stop Thinking You’re “Above” Self-Promotion (And Start Doing This Instead) - Introvert Whisperer Stop Thinking You’re “Above” Self-Promotion (And Start Doing This Instead) Somehow as an Introvert Leader, you have made it to the level you are right now by some means. You weren’t discovered like a starlet at a diner. You had to be competitive to get where you are. Even if this is your first job, you’ve had to self-promote just to get the job. Self-promotion is something you must do if you’re going to do something besides play video games all day long. Yet, I fairly consistently hear comments that it’s a disgusting, demeaning thing to do and only the truly loathsome humans out there do it. You perform and your work stands as a pillar of virtue and speaks for itself. You are “above” that behavior. If this is your thinking, you’ve put yourself in a trap where you will stay until a stymied career finally frustrates you or you retire. You will get to watch as other, less skilled people get ahead. Is this you? (Please, be truthful.) You Need to Recalibrate Your View of Self-Promotion Self-promotion begins as an infant when you learn that your parents stand between you and a candy bar. We all have goals and are continuously in the mode of pursuing them. You’re doing something to move yourself from point A to point B when you have a goal, even if it’s to learn to play golf. All goals include self-promotion to achieve them. The trap that we Introvert Leaders run into is that we see people who are over-the-top, self-important braggers who are truly worth avoiding. We think that’s the role model of self-promotion and all too often, we over-correct in the other direction. We fail to self-promote while doing our job because we deliberately choose the opposite behavior. When you fail to self-promote, you’re choosing to fail your career goals. (Click here to tweet this thought.) Another thing you’re failing to do is pay attention to the other self-promotion that is also going on all around you. You probably didn’t notice it because it wasn’t as blatant. How to Do Self-Promotion the Right Way The other and better self-promoter is the person who updates and communicates with the boss. That real role model is learning what the boss’s priorities are and working to support them. A good self-promoter figures out what it takes to earn a promotion and works openly to earn it. You need to realize that climbing up in your career is more than merely performing well. You also climb the ladder of success by forming great relationships with people who like and support you. Each step you make will be easier because you were savvy enough to realize that people (especially the boss) won’t go out of their way to discover your great performance. You have to go out of your way to help them understand what you’ve done and why it’s a good thing. You, not someone else, must take the responsibility to self-promote if you ever want to take one step forward. You can self-promote in a very authentic, honest way. How to Identify Your Study Style Many students believe there is a single way to study, and that those who excel in school have mastered that style. However, the truth is that there are many ways to review, and part of being successful is determining the methods that work best for you. You may also want to check out these 5 random items to help you study. Here are several questions you can ask yourself to identify your ideal study style: How do I learn best by seeing, hearing, or doing? There are three primary learning stylesvisual (learning via seeing), auditory (learning via hearing), and kinesthetic (learning via doing). Consider an activity that you are particularly skilled at. How did you learn to perform it? Was it through reading a book or watching another person? If so, you may be a visual learner. Was it by listening to an explanation or having a discussion with someone? If that is the case, you may be an auditory learner. If you utilized a hands-on or trial-and-error approach, you may be a kinesthetic learner. Once you determine how you learn best, you can tailor your study style to your learning style. If you decide that you are a visual learner, review your textbook and reread your notes. You may also find it useful to create flash cards in order to remember key points and wordsor to sketch concepts so you can better visualize them. If you believe you are an auditory learner, it may be helpful for you to record class lectures and to listen to them as a form of review. Consider reading your textbooks aloud. Often, auditory learners also do well in study groups where there is dialogue about subjects or where they can explain an idea to another person. Kinesthetic learners excel when doing. Even when in a class which does not tailor itself to hands-on learning (such as literature), kinesthetic learners can benefit from moving their bodies while studying. Read your book while walking on a treadmill, act out concepts with other classmates, or simply take breaks from studying to go for a brief walk. Do I prefer to study alone or with others? Certain students work best alone, while others gain more knowledge and understanding by collaborating with others. It is important for you to determine how you study best in order to make the most of your time. There are though many benefits to group study. If you tend to work best alone, designate a time and place where you can study. Set personal goals for yourself in order to remain on track. If, on the other hand, you learn best in groups, locate classmates who also prefer learning and reviewing this way. Create a study group and schedule times to regularly meet. Some students find that they like a combination of group and personal study time. Determine what works best for you, but do not be afraid to experiment or change. If you decide that a review group you joined for a particular class is not beneficial to you, then join a different group or study on your own. Your time is precious, and you should utilize it in a way that best complements you and helps you succeed. Does my school have resources available to me to help determine my study style? Academic centers, admissions counselors, guidance counselors, andtutors frequently have resources available for studentsto help them determine how they learn best. These may be online or pencil-and-paper assessments or a person who has been trained in various styles. Use the resources available at your school in order to derive the greatest benefit from your educational experience. There is no one way to study, nor is there a correct way to study. However, there are techniques that work better than others for each individual student. By determining what type of learner you are and how you best study, you can use your time wisely and be as successful as possible in your education!

At the same time, they will be exposed to Hindi as the second language of the film, and new words and phrases from the Hindi language might become popular for a time in the Sindhi community. Some will fade away, but other Hindi phrases will survive and make it into the permanent vocabulary of Sindhi.Bollywood is very popular, and Hindi movies will be available in non-Hindi-speaking communities. So you will find Hindi terms in Malay, Indonesian (though Indonesian has more Sanskrit terms than Hindi), Lao, Burmese and Thai.However, on the whole, Hindi’s influence on other Asian languages is minimal.There is a large Indian community that has built up in Nepal over several centuries. They call themselves Madhesis and many still speak the Awadhi dialect  of Hindi.Hindi Words in Languages Outside of AsiaAnywhere there is a sizeable Indian population, it seems likely that Hindi words will enter the local language. Hindi loanwords can turn up in pla ces you might not suspect.Hindi Creole LanguagesIn certain places, Hindi has been combined with other languages, either imported or local, to create a sort of lingua franca to allow various different populations with different languages to communicate with each other.Fiji uses a form of Hindi derived mainly from the Awadhi dialect, with some influence from the Bhojpuri, Magahi and Bihari language of India. Called Hindustani by the Fijian Indian community, it also incorporates words from the native Fijian language and English.Fiji Hindi is quite similar to Caribbean Hindustani, a lingua franca for the population of Indian descent living on most Caribbean islands (except for French Guyana, Martinique and Guadeloupe, where most of the Indians are from southern India, where Dravidian languages are spoken). Carribean Hindustani mostly borrows from the Hindi Awadhi dialect, as well as a mix of Bhojpuri and other Bihari dialects along with smatterings of the local languages.There is Fiji H indi creole used to communicate on the Pacific islands of Fiji and Vanuatu. They speak a form of Hindi with a lot of Awadhi and Bhojpuri mixed in. The language they speak is similar to a form of Indian spoken on Mauritius.Because a lot of Indians came to Africa during the Colonial Period - some as slaves, some as servants and some as free men and women - Hindi words have entered some African languages such as Swahili or Somali.English Words Derived from HindiYou will find Hindi words in other languages, too, such as Hebrew, Italian or even Scots. However, those words usually did not come directly from Hindi, but from the Hindi terms that have made it into the English language.Through over a century of colonial rule, a lot of Hindi words made it into standard English vocabulary.
